Materials Manufacturing of Wood is a Technology class designed to teach students about the properties specific to wood, and how to use machines to process this material into usable products. The two main projects that we focus on are constructing a footstool and bridge building. The footstool project is an introductory project used to teach students how to work with wood in a Shop setting safely. They learn how to use various tools and equipment such as the Table Saw, Band Saw, Jointer, Surface Planer, Router, Sanders, Drills and Measuring. The entire project is held together using dowel joints. The Bridge building project introduces students to structures and the problem-solving process essential to engineering. Students are given certain design constraints, and they must create their own design for a bridge to build and test. Some of our bridges held over 100lbs!
